Upgrading to a Better .com: How to Rebrand Without Losing Your Google Rankings
K.R. ·
Maybe you started with a long name, a hyphen or a .net because the .com wasn't available. Now your business has grown and the better name is within reach. The biggest worry most owners have is losing their Google rankings in the move. Done right, you won't.
Step 1: Secure the new domain first
Buy the new name and confirm it's transferred to your own registrar account before you change anything. Keep your old domain too. Never let it expire, since it carries your links and history.
Step 2: Make a list of every page
Export a list of every URL on your current site, plus your most-visited pages from your analytics. This becomes your redirect map.
Step 3: Set up the new site
Copy your site to the new domain and keep the same page structure where you can. If a page lives at /services/repairs today, put it at /services/repairs on the new domain.
Step 4: Add 301 redirects, page by page
A 301 redirect tells browsers and search engines that a page has moved for good. Point every old URL to its matching new URL, not just everything to the homepage. Page-to-page redirects carry most of your ranking strength over.
Step 5: Tell Google about the move
In Google Search Console, add and verify the new domain, then use the Change of Address tool on the old one. Submit a fresh sitemap for the new domain.
Step 6: Update everything you control
Google Business Profile and other directory listings
Social media profiles
Email signatures and email addresses
Ads, invoices, trucks, signs and business cards
Important backlinks: ask partners to update links to the new name
Step 7: Watch and wait
It's normal to see a small dip for a few weeks while search engines process the change. Keep the redirects in place permanently. Most sites recover, and many end up stronger thanks to a more memorable, more clickable name.
Common mistakes to avoid
Redirecting every page to the homepage
Letting the old domain expire
Changing the domain and redesigning the whole site at the same time
Forgetting to update your Google Business Profile
Is the upgrade worth it?
A better domain makes every bit of marketing easier: people remember it, type it correctly and trust it more. If the name you've always wanted is for sale, a monthly payment plan can make the move affordable today.
